Meet handsome Dexter, a two-year-old brown Dobermann looking for his forever home through no fault of his own. Sadly, he is coming into rescue due to his owner developing a severe allergy to him that cannot be safely managed during pregnancy.
Dexter is currently entire and will be rehomed with a neutering clause as part of his adoption contract.
He has been described by his assessor as a lovely boy who has been well cared for. He clearly enjoys human company and interaction and thrives on being included in family life. He currently lives with a toddler; however, he is a typical young Dobermann; bouncy, enthusiastic, and full of energy. For this reason, we feel he would be better suited to a home with older, dog-savvy children who are confident around large, exuberant dogs.
Dexter is used to having his own designated space and sleeps overnight (and during the day) in a dog-style den under the stairs. He settles well there and can be left happily in this environment. A similar setup will be required in his new home, as he is comfortable with and benefits from having his own safe space.
Out and about, Dexter is accustomed to travelling in the boot of a car. He is currently walked on a slip lead and, with a competent handler, will walk nicely. He will sit and wait to cross roads, although he can become excitable when he sees other dogs. He hasn’t had a great deal of exposure to dogs outside his home environment, so any introductions to visiting dogs will need to be managed carefully and gradually.
Dexter does not have reliable recall at present, so this will need consistent training work within a secure area. He can also be enthusiastic when greeting visitors, though he is not generally a barky dog.
Like many young Dobermanns, Dexter enjoys his toys, although they may not last long, as he does like a good chew!
Dexter would make a fantastic addition to an experienced home that understands the Dobermann breed and is prepared to continue his training and guidance. He already has solid foundations in place and, with the right structure and leadership, has all the potential to grow into an exceptional companion.
If you feel you can offer Dexter the committed, knowledgeable home he deserves, we would love to hear from you.
